The SAWZALL - a dangerous yet flexible tool. Three classic circuits combine to bring SAWZALL to life:
HM-2 TONE STACK
With the Mid EQ separated out from the Treble (on the original HM2 they were controlled simultaneously by the HIGH knob), and giving the Mid Frequency range an extra wide sweep - this EQ is actually capable of a good bit more than just the Chainsaw sound, as well as a lot of saw variations.
All three EQ bands are at their stock frequencies when the Frequency knobs are set at noon.
DRIVE
A modded approach to the Distortion+ / 250 circuit that is fine tuned to work well with the HM-2 tone stack. It goes from clean to saturated overdrive. This is the same circuit as featured in the DIY SAWZALL PCB.
For the classic chainsaw approach: Dial all EQ FREQUENCIES at noon and all EQ VOLUMES all the way up. Fine tune to your tastes.
FUZZ
My take on the classic Colorsound One Knob Fuzz featuring BC108B transistors. This circuit is heavy and has a lot of low end which sounds great through a cranked amp and brings a wide range of sounds suitable for doom, shoegaze, garage, grunge, etc.
This style of fuzz, as with other Fuzz Face related circuits, is sensitive to having buffered pedals between it and your guitar. It is recommended to have such fuzzes be the first pedal your guitar connects to, or if need be to only have true bypass pedals before it. ( This is only true of the FUZZ setting on SAWZALL, the DRIVE setting is not sensitive to buffered pedals )
In FUZZ mode I suggest keeping the LOW VOLUME knob under 4 O'Clock, or the low end can start to overwhelm the input of your amp and feel like it's destroying everything, unless that's the tone you're after! While I could have removed some of this low end from the fuzz circuit, it felt like it would be detrimental to many of the other possible tonal variations.
* Please note that the OVERDRIVE knob is only functional in DRIVE mode. In the classic one-knob fuzz tradition, there is no "fuzz" knob in FUZZ mode - it's all or nothing.
