AKA: What Will You Invoke?
The video above probably gives the best idea of what INVOCATION is possible of. The control set is as follows:
LOW / HIGH
The classic HM-2 tone stack. Cranking both knobs all the way up delivers the specific chainsaw EQ curve.
POWER
Think of this as a multiplier of the tone stack. Noon is the stock HM-2. All the way up is over 200% of the stock intensity, and below noon are more subtle chainsaw shades. Because the HIGH and LOW controls shape the EQ curve itself, and not just the volume of those frequency bands, the POWER control is useful for tuning the tone stack to your needs.
PRE / POST
These are clean, and tonally neutral volume boosts, placed before and after the clipping stage and tone stack. The signal flow is: PRE -> CLIPPING -> TONE STACK -> POST. Use the PRE knob to drive the input harder into the clipping stage and tone stack opamps, or to keep it clean. Use the POST knob to boost your output as needed, or to lower the output after driving the PRE hard. There is enough volume on tap for INVOCATION to be used as a boost.
S / 0 / M
The HM-2 has silicon clipping diodes in the original design, and while it may seem counterintuitive to include clipping in what is more or less debatably an EQ pedal, the diodes do shape the tone, and are part of the original chainsaw flavor.
S - Silicon setting has the tightest bass, and most buzzsaw highs, use this for intensity.
M - Mosfet has a similar output with looser low end, and softened highs.
0 - No clipping diodes, which gives the most open and least compressed sounds, and can push the op amp into blown out distortion.
Note: With lower input signals, this may have little to no effect, as the signal is below the clipping threshold. The louder your input signal is, the more noticeable the clipping options will be.
SEND / RETURN
The side jacks are where the doors of chaos and inspiration are opened, and INVOCATION can be transformed into any kind of pedal you are looking for. The distortion circuit of the original HM-2 is gone, and you can replace that distortion with any gain, or effect of your choice. Make your own HM-2-Fuzz, or HM-2-Overdrive, or HM-2-Reverb, and on and on.
Simply place that other effect, or effects, in the SEND and RETURN jacks, and dial it however it works best with INVOCATION.
The pedal in the SEND / RETURN path can be left always on, and INVOCATION will control the signal path for the combined effect.
EXPERIMENT!
Experimentation with various effects in the SEND / RETURN path will be greatly rewarded. From reverb, to modulation, to soundscapes, to blistering fuzz, INVOCATION has something to offer pretty much all of them - adding vibe and texture. It is highly recommended to check out the demo videos on youtube for some inspiration or clarification!
